Hawaii (Kauai) – Day 2

We woke up around 7-8 am local time, and made it to the diner in town for breakfast. Here we started to formulate plans to hike the Kalalau Trail (a portion of the 11 mile strenuous route on the Na Pali Coast, northwest on the island). Upon arrival back in our hotel room, we packed both hiking gear, as well as beach stuff, in case a change of plans.

We stopped off at 7-Eleven for trail munchies. Good thing, since we would later skip lunch. We took about an hour to reach the trailhead. Upon arrival, we chucked the plans out the window and decided to drive back along the northward beaches to take photos. Along the way, we tasted wild/fresh coconut, became friends with a beached seal (later finding out these monk seals are an endangered species – only 1,200 remain), and found two geocaches. We also ran across Carrie, John, and her parents.

At the end of our sightseeing/photography run, we ended up spending the afternoon until sunset (7:10~ pm) enjoying Kee beach with Carrie, John, and her parents (who left around dinnertime). We enjoyed the water, beach, sun, sand. Some went for walks on the beach or nearby rocks. Some snorkeled (me) near the reef.

When we returned to the hotel around 8:30 pm, we quickly changed and walked over to Duke’s restaurant, adjacent to our hotel.

Today, we’re enjoying the hotel pool and beach for a bit before going ziplining (8 ziplines) and swimming in a waterfall for the afternoon.
